ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Residents are beginning to move back into Asteri Ithaca.
On March 20, the Order to Vacate the building was lifted, effective at 2:30 p.m.
City officials say the required life-safety pressurization testing was successful at the apartment building. The order was issued on March 4th by the Ithaca Fire Department (IFD) after they discovered damage in the stairwells that would increase the risk of death in the event of a fire.
“Today’s results show that the building’s life safety systems are functioning as designed,” said IFD Chief Michael Moody. “In addition to the ‘Immediate Life Safety Issue,’ multiple fire code violations have been corrected for compliance. The fire department will continue to monitor the building through inspections.”
The Vecino Group, which owns the property, plans to conduct a step-by-step return plan.
Vecino will implement a coordinated, phased return of residents to Asteri Ithaca following confirmation that the Order to Vacate has been lifted by the city. This approach is intended to support an orderly transition, reduce disruption, and provide assistance to residents throughout the re-entry process.
Re-entry is scheduled to begin today (March 20) with residents currently housed at the one hotel site. TCAT transportation services are expected to be available, subject to availability, to assist residents with travel from the Quality Inn to Asteri Ithaca between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Re-entry will occur on a hotel-by-hotel basis. Beginning Monday, Vecino will coordinate, in collaboration with community partners, return logistics for residents temporarily house at the remaining partner hotels. Direct communication will be provided to residents at each location with specific instructions regarding timing, transportation options, and move-in procedures. Hotel accommodations for residents at these locations will be extended through the weekend to ensure a smooth and supported transition.
Vecino staff will be present on-site throughout the re-entry period to support residents, facilitate the transition, and address immediate needs. This phased approach reflects a continued focus on resident health and safety while working to restore normal operations at the community.

The city has requested a volunteer Fire Police presence throughout the return process. Additionally, law enforcement will be stationed nearby for any immediately necessary response.
Ithaca, in coordination with Foodnet Meals on Wheels, is additionally providing two frozen prepared meals for the returning 138 residents to be distributed Monday and Tuesday.
