ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A conservation effort is moving forward in Ithaca.

On May 27, the town announced an acquisition of 137 acres on South Hill, which will be known henceforth as the Sage Preserve.

Previously owned by Tessa Sage Flores and Ira Goldstein, the property features streams, wetlands, forested areas, and successional growth areas that play a key role in ecosystem health. The public is invited to use the existing trails on the property for walking and other passive recreation.

The town thanked the previous owners for their stewardship and the opportunity to protect the land in perpetuity.

“This South Hill preserve is a great addition to the Town’s network of preserves, and it is timely given anticipated housing development in that area,” said Town Supervisor Rod Howe. “The acquisition meets multiple town goals and will benefit future and current residents.”

The purchase was made possible through the Park Foundation, Tompkins County’s Natural Infrastructure Grant Program, and the Town of Ithaca.
