ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The Tompkins County Whole Health Department (TCWH) is urging MMR vaccination.

Earlier this week, cases of Measles were confirmed in both Tioga and Seneca Counties.

The once-rare, highly contagious virus spreads rapidly among those who are unvaccinated, which increases risks for severe complications, hospitalization, and death. The virus can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or by direct contact with a contaminated surface. Symptoms of infection include high fever, a runny or congested nose, cough, sore throat, and watery eyes. They can manifest anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks after exposure, and a red, blotchy rash can show up within 3-5 days after the arrival of cold-like symptoms. can often be mistaken for other respiratory illnesses.

“Measles is a terrible virus with a very high infection rate in unvaccinated populations,” said TCWH Medical Director, Dr. William Kleplack. “The MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing infection. This means that while the vaccine is very effective at preventing illness, there is a risk that 3 out of every 100 vaccinated people could still become infected. The risk if you are not vaccinated is much greater.”

Those most at risk included unvaccinated people of any age (excluding anyone born before 1957), pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

“We strongly encourage families to make sure their children, especially those under age 5, stay up to date on their vaccination schedule,” added Klepack. “Children should get their first MMR shot at 12 through 15 months old, as soon as possible within this time period. The second dose may be given as soon as one month after the first dose but is typically given between 4 and 6 years of age. At this time, there is no need to seek early vaccination for your infant, and maintaining the routine immunization schedule is advised.”

If you suspect that you were exposed, you’re encouraged to contact the TCWH Division of Community Health at 607-274-6604. A post-exposure treatment that could prevent infection or lessen severity may be given within 72 hours.

If you develop symptoms, health officials ask that you refrain from visiting the emergency room, urgent care, or doctor’s office; call the health department or your primary care provider first so they can prepare. TCWH advises all who are unvaccinated or have only had one dose to contact their provider or TCWH to get up to date with their shots.
