CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – The state is investing in safer roadways across New York.

On June 25, Governor Kathy Hochul announced over $43 million in grants as part of the DOT’s Safe System initiative. The program aims to reduce highway deaths and support roadway improvements.

County and municipal governments will use the funding to support roadway improvements. In Central New York, Cortland County is the only awardee. Cortland County is receiving $261,000 to develop a Road Safety Plan.

In the Southern Tier, $4 million is going to projects in Chemung, Steuben, and Broome County.

“Making investments in our roadways is a critical step towards improving public safety,” said State Senator Lea Webb. “I am happy to see that the Southern Tier is receiving $4 million to improve our transportation infrastructure. These upgrades throughout our region will make highways safer, more contained, and will ultimately move the state closer towards our goal of creating safer state highways.”

In Chemung County, $1.71 million will be used to install barriers on Wyncoop Road in the Towns of Chemung, Baldwin, Erin, and Van Etten. Steuben County is awarded $1.6 million to install barriers on County Route 119 and County Route 11 in Bath, Cameron, Canisteo, and Thurston. In Broome County, $711,000 will go toward installing barriers, edge line marking, enhancing curve signage, and shoulder widening on Lewis and Smith-Hill Roads.
