NEW YORK, NEW YORK (607NewsNow) – New York wants to protect kids from social media.

On September 15, Attorney General Letitia James announced proposed rules to protect children online as part of the 2024 SAFE (Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation) for Kids Act.

It would require social media companies to restrict algorithm-driven feeds for minors and disable notifications from midnight to 6 a.m. without parental consent. It would also require advanced age verification, deleting any age-related data after use, and fining noncompliant companies $5,000 per violation.

According to James’ office, addictive feeds and nighttime notifications are tied to depression, anxiety, eating and sleep disorders, and other mental health issues in children and teenagers.

You can learn more about the proposal here and read the full rules here.

Public comment will be accepted via email at ProtectNYKidsOnline@ag.ny.gov through December 1.
