ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A local veteran and physician is being recognized at the state level.

On May 26, State Senator Lea Webb inducted Ithaca resident Dr. Susan Herson into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Albany.

The State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame recognizes inductees who have served with distinction and continued to give back through civic, charitable, and community leadership.

“Dr. Susan Herson exemplifies a lifetime of service through her distinguished military career, her leadership within the VA health care system, and her ongoing commitment to improving care for veterans and older adults,” said Senator Webb. “Her work has advanced safety and independence for patients and made a lasting impact on communities across New York State.”

A U.S. Navy veteran, Herson began her medical career as a General Medical Officer with the 2nd Force Service Support Group at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Among her accolades at Lejeune, she provided frontline care to more than 8,000 Marines and sailors and oversaw immunization programs across multiple bases. Upon completing her active duty, she went to work as Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff at the Bath and Finger Lakes VA. She later served as a PACT primary-care provider at the Fort Wayne VA.

Herson’s experience with older veterans and her aging parents led her to work in fall prevention and mobility safety. She founded remMD, which develops tools to help older adults remain safe and more independent in their own homes and care facilities.

“I first met Senator Lea Webb’s team through their dedicated outreach to veterans, from a pop-up event at Triphammer Mall to a Valentine’s Day celebration at Elizabeth Brewster House, and support for our Women Veterans Ithaca Chapter,” said Dr. Herson. “Being inducted into the Veterans Hall of Fame not only honors my own service, but also my father’s and shines a light on disabled veterans in our communities.”
