BINGHAMTON, NY (607NewsNow) – A death investigation continues at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

On October 8, 38-year-old Chelsey Davis, of Port Dickinson, died just 8 hours after she was sent to jail.

Davis was placed in the jail’s medical unit after a full medical and substance abuse screening.

According to a timeline released by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, she exhibited no signs of a medical emergency before she went into cardiac arrest. Davis received her third evaluation from medical staff just 20 minutes prior. Staff attempted CPR and used an AED.

“Our entire staff is deeply saddened by the death of Chelsey Davis, and we extend our sincerest condolences to her family,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar. “Any loss of life is tragic, but it hits especially close to home when it involves someone in our care. This is the first death our administration has encountered, and we are in the process of conducting a full review and investigation. However, from the initial reports and evidence, I am confident that our medical and correctional staff performed admirably and with vigilance, strictly adhering to their protocols and their training in their efforts to save Chesley’s life.”

The New York State Attorney General’s Office and the NYS Commission of Corrections are also reviewing the incident.

An autopsy was performed on October 9, but the results have not yet been released.
