LANSING, NY (607NewsNow) — Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne is running unopposed in November.

Jared Bentley, who launched his independent campaign in March to unseat Osborne, has bowed out of the campaign, citing personal reasons.

Bentley sent 607 News Now the following statement explaining his decision:

“I am addressing personal matters that require my attention at home, which impacts my ability to fully concentrate on my professional responsibilities. The decision to step back is not related to any discrepancies on social media; rather, it is solely due to personal circumstances that necessitate my focus on my family and children. I deeply value this community and my involvement within it. However, I believe that preparing myself more thoroughly before the next election for Sheriff will yield a more favorable outcome, and I remain committed to pursuing that endeavor. It is truly an honor to witness the strong unity and support within our community. I feel it is essential for me to prioritize the significant aspects of my life, which entails taking a step back to alleviate some of the daily pressures. I am neither embarrassed nor regretful of my actions or public presence. Instead, I am proud of the courage I demonstrated in pursuing an initiative that others did not. The effort invested is what truly matters. I am grateful and optimistic as I look forward to the next electoral race.”

Osborne’s re-election would mean a third term.
