Established in 1891 as the Cortland County Home for Aged Women, the Brewster House moved to its current structure in 1910 due to space needs. The relocation was made possible by Ebenezer and Carrie Barker Ranney.

The non-profit organization for senior living continues to operate in the village.

The marker was secured with help from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
