SUMMERHILL, NY (607NewsNow) – A Guatemalan man is facing deportation after an accident in Cayuga County.

On July 31, deputies were called to Salt Road just before 11 a.m. for a reported crash.

First responders reported that a Hispanic man left the scene and ran south. He was located a short time later at a residence on Salt Road.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the man, who identified himself as Omar Vazquez-Alvarado, crossed the center lane, struck a mailbox, and went into the ditch. Deputies allege that they could smell alcohol on Vasquez-Alvarado, who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

While receiving care, he was informed that he was being arrested for driving while intoxicated and was issued an appearance ticket. Authorities made arrangements for the man to report to the Cayuga County Public Safety Building (PSB) for paperwork after his release.

On August 2, the man was released from the hospital and reported to the PSB. However, with assistance from the United States Border Patrol, investigators uncovered that the subject was actually 28-year-old Otto Vazquez-Ramirez, of Guatemala. According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, Vazquez-Ramirez had forged and false documents, including a Social Security Card with a number belonging to a woman in Missouri, and a Guatemalan ID with the fake name he originally gave.

Vasquez-Ramirez had been previously deported in 2017 and remained in the country without possessing a valid legal status. He was turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, where he remains in custody.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office at (315) 253-1222 or submit a tip online.
