Gellar-Smith said returning customers appreciate the book selection and atmosphere. The store has cushy chairs and colorful plants.

Along with being a place to read and study, Protagonist offers baked goods and drinks. Gellar-Smith said the store sells locally roasted java from Copper Horse Coffee.

“We serve a great cup of coffee,” she said.
