CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – More green energy is coming to Cortland.

On June 17, the DEC announced the groundbreaking of a comprehensive HVAC overhaul at its Crown City sub-office.

The heating and cooling systems are being converted to geothermal and solar, which will help reduce the building’s annual fossil fuel consumption by 84%. Once completed, the building will also have improvements to its lighting and water supply. The New York State Office of General Services is leading design and construction.

“A green and renewable resource for heating and cooling is right under our feet here in Cortland,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton. “Thanks to DEC’s incredible operations team and the State Office of General Services, DEC was able to bring this sub-office to the forefront of Governor Kathy Hochul’s commitment to making state government a leader in implementing efficient and smart energy solutions.”

Additionally, 38 electric vehicle chargers will be installed on site. The Cortland sub-office is home to the regional staff of the Fish and Wildlife, Land and Forests, Habitat, and Pesticides departments. It additionally houses Region 7’s mechanical operations, which serve the staff fleet.
