CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A new program for older adults is coming to the Cortland County Family YMCA.

Beginning November 10, the Cortland YMCA is introducing the nationally recognized Enhance Fitness program. Designed to help adults manage arthritis and improve strength and balance, the program combines low-impact physical activity with social engagement.

“The YMCA is deeply committed to advancing community health,” said Gunnar Madison, Regional Executive Director of the Cortland County Family YMCA and the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County. “Programs like Enhance Fitness reflect our mission to improve well-being, prevent disease, and strengthen social bonds. By focusing on evidence-based interventions, we can ensure that our neighbors live healthier, more connected lives.”

Participant research shows a 35% improvement in physical functioning, a 53% improvement in depression symptoms, a 26% decreased risk of falls, and a 13% improvement in social functioning.

It will be offered free of charge thanks to $10,500 in grant money from the YMCA of the USA and the New York State Alliance of YMCAs.

“We are thrilled to bring Enhance Fitness to Cortland,” said Christie Thornton, CEO of the Cortland County Family YMCA and the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County. “This program addresses a real need in our community, providing not just physical benefits but also a chance for participants to connect with one another and reduce isolation. We are grateful to the YMCA of the USA and the New York State Alliance of YMCAs for making this possible.

According to the New York State Department of Health, over 31% of adults in Cortland County were living with arthritis in 2021.
