Cortland County District Attorney Patrick Perfetti says Joseph Miller was convicted Friday of criminally negligent homicide. In December 2023, the 38-year-old was arguing with his 60-year-old girlfriend Laurie Wing. The argument turned physical, and Wing died over two weeks later.

According to the DA’s office, “a witness indicated that, as the dispute spilled outside of Miller’s apartment, he was seen with a knife, and the victim had a laceration upon her forehead. The following police investigation detailed that the victim had also been beaten and strangled.”

“This is an example of how domestic violence can turn to a tragic end,” Perfetti said. “But we are hopeful that the resolution of this case will bring closure to the victim’s family.”

Miller, who’s now a 2-time offender, faces 2-to-4 years in a state facility when he’s sentenced on December 9. A jury also found him guilty on misdemeanor charges of assault, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, and obstruction of governmental administration.
