CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – The Cortland County SPCA is investigating a recent theft.

On February 15, the can and bottle drive bins at the shelter were emptied, which is causing serious funding concerns and has become an ongoing issue.

Officials say the perpetrators have also torn down posted signs and surveillance notices. In recent years, shelter staff have tried moving the bins and installing cameras. Police are reviewing footage to try to identify the suspects.

In the meantime, the Cortland County SPCA is asking for more volunteers to help redeem cans more often. Donors can also bring their returns directly to Superior Redemption in Cortland or American Bottle and Can in Homer. Inform the businesses that the donations are for the Cortland County SPCA.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information relevant to the investigation is asked to contact local law enforcement.
