CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A partial verdict has been returned in a Cortland County attempted murder trial.

On July 21, 61-year-old Steven Burda was found guilty on 9 criminal charges, including four counts of felony aggravated assault of a police officer.

However, the Cortland Standard reports that the jury was deadlocked on the charges of attempted murder of a police officer. Burda was arrested in January 2024 after firing his shotgun at officers who attempted to serve him an eviction notice on Homer Ave. in the City of Cortland.

Burda, who previously pleaded not guilty, was injured when police returned fire. Captain Anthony Phelps of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office received a NYS Police Officer Medal of Honor for the incident. He was cleared of all wrongdoing in the matter.

Prosecutors are unsure if they’ll proceed to sentencing or seek a retrial on the unresolved counts of attempted murder. The case returns to court on August 11 to determine the next step.
