ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Cornell University has released results of a survey about sexual assault.

Out of approximately 6,000 students asked to participate, only 926 students completed the survey during the spring semester. According to results, 15% of students who responded say they experienced nonconsensual sexual contact, which is up from 2023 and 2021; reports of harassment and stalking have also increased since the prior survey years. Cornell conducts the survey every 2 years.

On a positive note, more students said they’re aware of support services on campus, with 23% of students saying they contacted a formal resource after experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact. “However, many students indicate their experiences are “not serious enough” to report, despite the university’s education and outreach on sexual misconduct prevention and resources. This underscores the importance of peer support and bystander intervention. Encouragingly, students overwhelmingly agree on the importance of speaking up and intervening in harmful situations,” officials said.

In the spring, Cornell formed a task force to address sexual assault on the Ithaca campus.
