AUBURN, NY (607NewsNow) – A teacher in the Auburn Enlarged City School District (AECSD) is credited with saving a life.

Genesee Elementary School teacher Holly Signor was chaperoning a field trip to the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse in May when a student began to choke.

According to the district, the boy, who had swallowed a bottle cap, lunged at Signor with his hands around his throat. Signor, trained in first aid, immediately performed the Heimlich Maneuver to clear the fourth-grader’s airway.

It’s the second choking incident this school year in the district. Last fall, Auburn Junior High School Dean of Students Allison Teachout assisted a student who got a cookie stuck in their throat during lunch

Signor was recently recognized for her actions by the AECSD Administration and Board of Education.
