Several weeks after its creation, a working group formed to address truck traffic in the City of Ithaca has yet to meet.
The group was established in response to the fatal June 20 truck-hauler crash at Simeon’s on the Commons.
Local State Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton says she has had discussions with DoT officials and Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick, but they’re still in the process of collecting information.
“We’ve been gathering information, and we should have a date shortly for the first actual meeting of the working group,” Lifton said.
Lifton says the DoT hasn’t shown much willingness to allow any re-routing of trucks on state roads.
“DOT did not offer a lot of hope that there’s some way to reroute truck traffic out of the city,” she said. “You’re just not allowed to do it, generally speaking, unless you show a really egregious situation. It’s rare that you can reroute trucks out of a state road.”
