CORTLAND — A bear that got plenty of attention around Cortland Monday morning has died, according to state Department of Environmental Conservation officials.

The 200-pound black bear was found in a tree along Elm Street in the city of Cortland early Monday morning around 6 a.m. Authorities say the bear was about 30 feet up in the tree.

A bucket truck used by the Cortland public works department was used to help tranquilize the bear, which then fell, hitting limbs and branches on the way down. The bear then landed in a net.

The bear was taken to Cornell’s vet school to be evaluated, but was later pronounced dead.

DEC officials said in a statement that standard protocols were followed for capturing bears in “urban wildlife situations.”

This was the same bear that had been fitted with a GPS collar after it caused a number of problems in the village of Earlville near the Madison and Chenango county borders earlier this month.

The bear had reportedly traveled about 20 miles from when it was last tracked last week.
