ITHACA — Officials with the Town of Ithaca say they’re considering lowering the speed limit on a well-traveled road for safety reasons.
Town supervisor Bill Goodman says he and other lawmakers have been hearing from residents about the need to slow down cars along East King Road. He says the speed limit along the road drops to 30 miles per hour by the Elizabeth Ann Clune Montessori School, but parents want less.
Goodman says it’s primarily out of concern for the safety of students.
“There is a crosswalk along the road, because the school has facilities on both sides of East King Road, and I think there’s a concern that some of the students are trying to cross the road, and cars aren’t stopping like they’re supposed to,” he said.
But Goodman says there are some legal complications to changing the speed limit.
“East King Road is actually a county road, not a town road, and all speed limit reduction requests have to go through the New York State Department of Transportation anyway,” he said. “So what the Town Board did is we just recommended that we send the petition on to the county and asked them to send it on to New York State for review.”
The Town of Ithaca is also currently working on a pedestrian corridor study of Route 96B as the road enters the City of Ithaca. Goodman says the projects aren’t related, but they’re both aimed at increasing pedestrian safety in the area.
