A Cornell University student has been charged in the murder of his father in the Rochester area.
Charles Tan, 19, was charged after a domestic dispute Monday at his family’s home in Pittsford. He reportedly killed his father, 49-year-old Ling Tan, whose body was found inside the home.
When authorities arrived, they found Charles Tan and his mother, Qing, standing in the driveway of the home.
Police say they also found a shotgun in the garage of the home Tuesday morning.

Tan was arraigned Tuesday on a second-degree murder charge and taken to jail.
Audio recordings of emergency calls obtained by the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle indicate that Tan initially said he was defending himself.
The 19-year-old is listed as a sophomore at Cornell, and is a member of the university’s Sprint Football team, according to the school’s athletics website.
Cornell University Vice President Joel Malina issued a statement Tuesday morning.
“A student by the name of Charles John Tan, of Pittsford, N.Y., is enrolled as a sophomore in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University,” the statement read. “Cornell University is not involved in the Pittsford investigation and consequently we have no comment on that investigation. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”
