OWEGO, N.Y. (WHCU) — Images of a Tioga County school district’s new mascot have been released.
The River Hawks replaced an outdated mascot at the start of the Owego Apalachin Central School District’s academic year. It includes the head of an osprey with the district’s colors of red and blue.
“This transition is a testament to the importance of community, pride, and tradition,” said Dr. Corey Green, the district’s superintendent. “Change can be difficult, and we acknowledge the various emotions of moving on from a long-standing mascot. This new chapter reflects the district’s dedication to creating an educational environment that honors its rich history while embracing future opportunities.”
The change came after state education officials issued a mandate that school districts in New York could no longer use Native American names or imagery.
