ALBANY — New York’s attorney general is asking the Planet Fitness franchise to change its tanning policies.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says Planet Fitness can no longer offer unlimited tanning services as part of premier memberships, and must also provide training to employees who are in charge of tanning areas at the company’s locations.

“This agreement is part of a continuing effort to protect consumers from the documented skin cancer risks of indoor tanning,” Schneiderman said.” I am especially concerned with rising cancer rates associated with indoor tanning, particularly for young people, and businesses that offer indoor tanning should market their services truthfully.”

Schneiderman says investigators found a number of violations of state laws regarding tanning at multiple locations around New York.

Planet Fitness, which has a location at the Shops at Ithaca Mall, will also pay $50,000 dollars in penalties and other costs as part of the agreement.

The company also agreed not to make health-related claims to promote red lamp devices and to comply with all New York tanning regulations at Planet Fitness locations around the state
