Meth labs abundant in Cortland County

Meth labs seem to keep popping up in Cortland County, with at least half a dozen arrests made in the past month.

Cortland County legislators tried aligning local law with a federal law, limiting an individual’s purchases of pseudoephedrine—a key ingredient in making methamphetamine.

County Legislator Kevin Whitney says lawmakers hit a snag when passing that law. “We’re not getting ahead of it,” Whitney said. “Our district attorney is trying to push the state to bring something in line with the federal law, but the session has ended and we were not able to do that.”

Whitney says without some action from the state–giving local enforcement the tools to combat the issue–methamphetamine will likely continue to be a serious problem in Cortland County.

“It’s easy to make, it’s cheap to make, and it doesn’t take a lot of effort to do it,” he said. “That’s why it’s become the new popular drug.”
