A recent study shows one of the most expensive places in the country for a family of four to live is right here in Ithaca.
The Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., crunched the numbers and found that a family with two adults and two kids would need about $7,700 a month and around $92,000 a year to cover a list of expenses including food, transportation, and health care. This puts it on par with urban areas including San Francisco and New York City, and eighth most expensive nationally.
Tanyell Cooke of the EPI says the biggest costs in Ithaca are housing and child care.
“In a lot of places, child care costs are almost twice as high as rent costs,” she said. “In fact, in Ithaca child care is 78 percent more expensive per month than rent for a two-parent, two-child household.”

Cooke says Ithaca doesn’t fare much better within New York State.
“It’s actually the fifth most expensive place in the state,” she said. “It’s more expensive than places like Albany, which has a budget of $84,000 a year for a two-parent, two-child household, more expensive than Syracuse, Buffalo, Utica, and a couple other localities.”
Cooke says five of the ten most expensive places to live for a family of four are in New York.
