The Public Safety Committee of the Tompkins County Legislature unanimously voted last week to advance a resolution supporting access to driver’s licenses for all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status.
The resolution urges the State Legislature to pass the Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act, versions of which are currently making their way through the State Assembly and Senate. The Ithaca Voice reports Legislator Anna Kelles introduced the resolution. She said the measure isn’t an attempt to fix the immigration system overall, but would improve public safety and help immigrants across the state integrate within their communities.
