The Cortland community is mourning the loss of a high school student who was found dead in her home Friday.
Police are investigating the death of 16-year-old Amie Leland as a homicide. Her cause of death appeared to be blunt force trauma and stab wounds.
They’ve arrested 23-year-old Michael Hammond II and charged him with second-degree murder.
Cortland City School District Superintendent Michael Hoose says they’re staffing counselors at schools for those in need.
“We have counselors available throughout the school day,” Hoose said. “We also are concerned about our staff as well, making sure they’re supported as we try and get through this.”
A Facebook page in memory of Amie Leland asked the community to wear teal Monday to honor her memory.
A GoFundMe page was also set up for the teen’s family.
