CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) – A Cortland man has been arrested after an investigation into improper benefits.

Authorities say 40-year-old Laroy Nelson failed to report income information and filed fraudulent documents with the Cortland County Department of Social Services between September 2021 and November 2022. Nelson allegedly received more than $7,000 dollars in benefits he wasn’t entitled to.

Nelson is charged with felonies of grand larceny, welfare fraud, and two counts of offering a false instrument for filing. He is scheduled to appear in Cortland City Court on May 17, 2023.
