The seemingly unlikely pairing of Texas boogie trio ZZ Top and UK synth-pop stalwarts Depeche Mode blends seamlessly in ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons’ remix on the Depeche Mode track “Soothe My Soul.” Harkening back to his band’s use of synthesizers on their 1983 album Eliminator, Gibbons said, “Bands like Depeche Mode were leading the synthesizer charge at this time. [Depeche Mode singer] Dave Gahan told me they were looking for a little ‘Texas mud’ to go with the electronica. Funny how things go around in circles sometimes.” Meanwhile, ZZ Top’s 10-disc box set The Complete Studio Albums 1970-1990 is available today.
