Heads up! Even though the U.S. Mint has stopped making new pennies, the coin isn’t disappearing anytime soon. There are already hundreds of billions of pennies in circulation, which means they’ll continue to show up in pockets, cash drawers, and couch cushions for years to come.
And as for retiring the penny completely? That would take an act of Congress — and so far, no such move has been made.
