The Working Stiff Show

Thursday 9/10/15: Thirsty Thursday!

Morning Dish 1:

SCIENCE SAYS MAKING YOUR BED IS A BAD IDEA: If you hate making your bed you’ll be glad to know science says you really shouldn’t anyway. Dr. Stephen Pretlove from the Kingston University School of Architecture explains that at any given time there are 1.5 million microscopic insects living in your bed called dust mites. They feed off of human skin cells and require a warm, damp atmosphere to survive. Since we sweat in our sleep, we create an ideal breeding ground for the critters if we make our bed immediately after waking. However if you leave the bed unmade the sheets will be exposed to air and light and ultimately dry out. Dry mites are dead mites, so if you’re allergic to the bugs and their droppings (as many people are) it might be worth it to leave your bed unmade. (Elite Daily)

Strange, But True:

MAN SAYS HE’S GONE 12 YEARS WITHOUT BATHING: How often do you shower? Boston-based chemical engineer David Whitlock says he hasn’t bathed in 12 years, and that he doesn’t stink. Whitlock helped found the company AOBiome in 2013 after making a surprise discovery that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in dirt converts sweat’s urea and ammonia into good bacteria with anti-inflammatory properties. Whitlock then began covering his body with a mixture of AOB and water. He says it keeps his skin looking and smelling fine, and that it does wonders for his mental health. (Newser)

THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES TRAPPED IN 26-LANE TRAFFIC JAM IN INDIA: And you thought your commute was frustrating this morning… thousands of drivers traveling in India between New Delhi and Gurgaon sat in a 26-lane traffic jam yesterday (September 9th.) Times of India (TI) reports traffic in the area has been a long-standing issue, but was made worse when local government “experimented” to try and solve the problem. Last year a 32-lane toll station between the two cities was removed in order to ease traffic, but instead resulted in severe bottle-necking further down the expressway. Local authorities are now playing the blame game, with TI noting, “As usual, motorists get stuck in the middle, on the road to nowhere…” (Daily Mail)

SELFIE-SHOOTING DRIVER GETS A CANOE THROUGH HIS WINDSHIELD: Driving selfies should probably be outlawed. A Florida man using a selfie stick to film himself driving his jeep managed to record the moment he rear-ended another vehicle. Not only did driver Alex Lopatnyuk get in an embarrassing accident, but the vehicle he hit had a canoe sticking out of the back that then went through his windshield. Lapatnyuk posted the video to Facebook, noting that it serves as a “PSA” showing “why you shouldn’t text and drive or try to take a selfie and drive.” (UPI)

Morning Dish 2:

TWO NEW APPS THAT COULD CHANGE THE WAY WE LIVE

Samsung Electronics Co and Panasonic Corp both showcased devices at the IFA, Europe’s largest consumer electronics show, geared to helping people sleep better and wake up more refreshed. Samsung’s Sleep Sense can be placed underneath the mattress at night where it can monitor heartbeat, breathing and movements. Data is transmitted to a tablet, where it will be ready for analysis over breakfast. Sleep Sense could also be connected to air conditioning, electronic window blinds or lights, allowing for room temperature and lights to be adapted depending on the user’s physical condition. Panasonic showed similar prototypes which can measure sleep rhythm and time an alarm to gently ease the user awake during a period of light snoozing, rather than giving a sudden jolt from a deep slumber. The device can be linked to air conditioning and, if connected to a coffee machine, the user can be greeted with the smell of fresh coffee in the morning. – See more here

APP LETS YOU BRING A ‘COMPANION’ ON YOUR SKETCHY WALK HOME: Sometimes you have to walk through a sketchy area at night, and there’s no one there to make you feel safe. Now there’s an app for that. It’s called “Companion” and allows users to virtually invite friends or family members to keep them company on their journey. A GPS tracker on an online map lets a loved one “join” you in your walk without leaving the comfort of their couch. The app sends an invite request via SMS to the companion’s phone, and will notify them if the user strays off the path, falls, is pushed, or starts running. In any of these situations, the app alerts the user and prompts him or her to press a button signaling that he or she is OK. If the user does not respond within 15 seconds, the app plays a loud alarm, attempting to scare away the criminals. Business Insider says the app was created to aid students walking home at night. The app is available for both Android and iOS. (Elite Daily)

Each ‘now’ is a ‘now.’ It’s not a ‘gone,’ it’s not a ‘will be,’ it’s not a ‘was,’ or a ‘shall,’ it’s a ‘now’ and an ‘am.’ and that’s really, what I think, it’s all about.”

Chickenfoot, the rock supergroup thought to be on permanent hiatus, is showing signs of life. Guitarist Joe Satriani confirmed that the band — which also features frontman Sammy Hagar, bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Chad Smith — is working on its first new track since the release of 2011’s Chickenfoot III. Satriani said that his “complaining and foot-stomping” pushed the band members to work on new music again, adding, “I’m working on a few others that I think I can get them to do. So, yeah, I think there’s hope.” (Classic Rock)

Metallica has posted footage online from one of two shows in Russia they did recently, in St. Petersburg on August 25th. The 18-minute clip features performance, rehearsal and backstage sequences.
