The Working Stiff Show

Short film takes you inside Pearl Jam’s ‘Lightning Bolt”.

Pearl Jam has released a nine-minute short film that takes fans behind the scenes for the making of the band’s upcoming 10th studio album, Lightning Bolt. The film features the group members talking with a handful of guest interviewers, including Knocked Up director Judd Apatow and Portlandia star Carrie Brownstein. The short delves into a number of topics related to Lightning Bolt and the creative process that yielded the record as Pearl Jam enters its 23rd year of recording and performing together.

  • At one point in the film, guitarist Stone Gossard says that singer Eddie Vedder was “on a tear” with writing lyrics, while guitar player Mike McCready jokes about keeping up with apparently ageless drummer Matt Cameron.
  • Gossard told us a while back that Pearl Jam feels like its songwriting is as strong as ever after so many years together: [“We’re still writing songs in a way that, we don’t take it — we haven’t started hiring people to write songs for us, or feeling like we can’t do it ourselves. And we keep being rewarded for our work that we do with each other and the chances we take in terms of trusting each other and songwriting and collaboration and all that stuff.”] SOUNDCUE (:18 OC: . . . all that stuff.)
  • The film also offers excerpts of a few yet-to-be-released songs from Lightning Bolt, which is due for release on October 15th.
  • Meanwhile, Vedder also opens up about the record in a new interview with Rolling Stone, saying that despite their many breaks and projects, Pearl Jam is “more of a group than ever,” adding, “It’s a big part of everybody’s life, to be playing music, at all times. And at the same time, it’s important to us to be part of our families, to not be absent fathers.”
  • The vocalist also hints that Pearl Jam could take less time between new albums in the future, saying, “When you take longer between records, there’s more importance placed on the records. Maybe the next thing you do is put out another one in the next year — just put it out, and not have a buildup.”
  • Pearl Jam kicks off a North American tour on October 11th in Pittsburgh, with the first leg ending the weekend of November 1st at the Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans. The second half of the trek starts on November 15th in Dallas, wrapping on December 6th in Pearl Jam’s hometown of Seattle.
