DAVID LETTERMAN TO INDUCT PEARL JAM INTO HALL OF FAME AFTER NEIL YOUNG FALLS ILLL
Pearl Jam will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday (April 7th) by former late night host David Letterman, according to Rolling Stone. Letterman is filling in for Neil Young, who was originally scheduled to induct the group but can no longer make the ceremony due to illness. The Hall of Fame issued a statement saying, “Due to illness, Neil Young is regrettably no longer able to induct Pearl Jam at this year’s Induction Ceremony. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is thrilled that David Letterman has agreed to induct Pearl Jam this Friday night at the 32nd Annual Induction Ceremony.”
Letterman was a huge Pearl Jam fan during his tenure as host of Late Show With David Letterman, inviting the band to perform on the show seven times and inviting frontman Eddie Vedder to appear solo as well. The band also played a 10-song set for the Late Show audience during one taping in 2006.
By contrast, Pearl Jam never appeared on The Tonight Show when Jay Leno was hosting that program.
The nature of Young’s illness was not disclosed. He and Pearl Jam have also had a strong relationship throughout the years, with Pearl Jam both opening for Young on tour and serving as his back-up band on the 1995 Mirror Ball album and subsequent European trek.
Letterman joins a list that includes Snoop Dogg inducting Tupac Shakur, Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson inducting Yes, Train’s Pat Monahan welcoming Journey and others.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York this Friday and air on HBO on April 29th at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

DAVE GROHL PENS FOREWORD TO HIS MOTHER’S NEW BOOK ON ROCK MOMS
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has written in the foreword to his mother’s new book that she “understands there are some kids who work outside of conventional systems.” The book, titled From Cradle To Stage: Stories From The Mothers Who Rocked And Raised Rock Stars, features interviews that Virginia Hanlon Grohl conducted with 18 rock mothers, including the moms of musicians like Rush’s Geddy Lee and Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello.
Also in the book are interviews with the mothers of Beastie Boys’ Mike D, Miranda Lambert, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and the late Amy Winehouse.
Dave Grohl writes in his introduction that the interview with Janis Winehouse “hits close to home because there are some parallels between Amy and Kurt (Cobain).”
Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain both died at the age of 27 after struggling with both fame and drug addiction.
Virginia Grohl told Rolling Stone that before writing the book, she was surprised at how rare it was to meet mothers of other rock stars at their kids’ shows. She added about the moms she interviewed, “They all said, ‘Oh, there’s nothing interesting about me except for my son or daughter.’ And then it turned out that wasn’t true at all.”
From Cradle To Stage: Stories From The Mothers Who Rocked And Raised Rock Stars will arrive on April 18th.

STEPHEN KING’S SLEEPING BEAUTIES TO BE ADAPTED FOR TV: Sleeping Beauties, Stephen King’s latest work co-written with his son Owen King, may not hit bookshelves until September, but it has already been optioned by Anonymous Content for a potential television series. The book recounts spooky happenings in a Appalachian town in which sleeping women become enshrouded in gauze and if they’re woken up, they become violent. Oscar-winning producer Michael Sugar (Spotlight) and Ashley Zalta are set to executive produce. They are the same team behind the Netflix hit The OA, which was recently renewed for its second season.

NETFLIX OFFICIALLY KILLS STAR RATINGS: TBD if Netflix users will give the new ratings system the thumbs up. The streaming giant is ousting its longstanding five-star ratings system for a more stream-lined thumbs up or down, it said Wednesday. Netflix previewed the plan to phase out the star ratings and users complained, but the company said the thumbs up or down will render more accurate results.

STUDY: SONGS ARE GETTING FASTER: A new study has found that pop songs are getting faster with shorter intros, and links the trend to streaming services. Hubert Leveille Gauvin, a doctoral student in music theory at Ohio State University, analyzed the year-end top 10 on the U.S. Billboard chart between 1986 and 2015. He found that the instrumental openings to hit songs have shrunk dramatically, and, to a lesser extent, the average tempo of them has been speeding up. So, it took about 23 seconds before the voice began on an average hit song in 1986, but it was just five seconds in 2015. Leveille Gauvin linked the change to the rise and popularity of streaming sites, telling AFP, “It makes sense that if the environment is so competitive, artists would want to try to grab your attention as quickly as possible.” He also said that artists may not even be consciously aware they’re doing it, explaining, “I think it’s just adapting yourself to your environment whether you’re aware of it or not.

STUDY: HERE’S HOW TO BE LESS TIRED AFTER WORK: If you want to be less tired after work, go for a walk at lunch says science. Published in the Journal of Occupational Healthy Psychology, research found when workers took 15 minutes of their lunch break to walk through a nearby urban park and focus on their natural surroundings, they had more enjoyment than they did during a typical lunch break. These higher levels of enjoyment were directly related to improvements in concentration and fatigue, the study authors say. Those benefits even lasted for hours after people took their breaks, and made them more productive for the remainder of their work day. (Time)

STUDY: DRINKING WINE ENGAGES THE BRAIN MORE THAN “ANY OTHER HUMAN BEHAVIOR”: Do you reach for a glass of wine each night? If so, one expert says you are engaging your brain. Professor Gordon Shepherd from the Yale School of Medicine says drinking wine sparks a reaction in both the sensory and emotional parts of the brain. He claims in his experiments he’s found drinking wine engages more of the brain than enjoying music or even solving a challenging math equation. Shepherd says, “The molecules in the wine don’t have taste or flavor, but when they stimulate our brains, the brain creates flavor the same way it creates color.” Interestingly, he says that spitting out wine while tasting prevents you from fully appreciating the flavor, so drink up. STUDY: WHY NATURE SOUNDS HELP YOU RELAX: Imagine ocean waves crashing, or tree leaves rustling– feeling relaxed? Researchers from Brighton and Sussex Medical School in England monitored the brains of 17 adults while they listened to a series of five-minute soundscapes of natural and manmade environments. The results showed activity in the brain’s default mode network– an area involved in mind wandering and ‘task-free’ states of wakefulness– varied depending on the background sounds being played. Specifically, listening to artificial sounds was associated with patterns of inward-focused attention (which can include worrying), while nature sounds promoted external-focused attention. Overall, nature sounds were associated with a decrease in the body’s sympathetic response (which causes that “fight-or-flight” feeling) and an increase in parasympathetic response—the one that helps the body relax and function in normal circumstances.
