This Week’s Video: REO Speedwagon – “Ridin’ the Storm Out”, Performed in Denver, CO 1981

REO SPEEDWAGON’S GARY RICHRATH DEAD AT 65
Former REO Speedwagon guitarist Gary Richrath died on September 13th at age 65 of undisclosed causes. Richrath, who joined the band in 1970 and recorded 12 albums with the band before splitting with the group in 1989, is best known for writing REO’s second Top 10 hit, the Top Five Hi Infidelity classic, “Take It On The Run,” and the band’s early favorite “Ridin’ The Storm Out.” Richrath, who had long battled alcoholism, released one solo album, 1992’s Only The Strong Survive, and to the delight of die-hards, had reunited with frontman Kevin Cronin and REO for a charity gig in 2013.

Kevin Cronin posted a message to fans on Facebook, which read:

Hi friends, kc here. My longtime friend and collaborator Gary Richrath passed away earlier today. I feel so sad. Gary was both a unique guitarist and songwriter, and the embodiment of the tough guy with a heart of gold. I learned most of what I know about being in a rock band from Gary Richrath. The entire REO Family mourns his death and shares in the grief of his family, friends, and fans. These words do not come close to expressing the depth of emotions I am feeling at this time. . . kc. PS. This photo has been on my music room table for as long as I can remember, and will stay there.

This year’s song of the summer is a ballad, not a banger. Here’s what that says about us

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
