ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND DRUMMER BUTCH TRUCKS DEAD AT 69 –
The Allman Brothers Band (ABB) has lost yet another founding member with Tuesday’s (January 24th) death of drummer Butch Trucks, according to Rolling Stone. The band’s official website (AllmanBrothersBand.com) posted a message to fans, which read: “Butch Trucks, a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, tragically died the night of January 24 in West Palm Beach, Florida. His wife, four children, four grandchildren and all of the Allman Brothers Band, their families and Road Crew survive Butch.
The Trucks and Allman Brothers Band families request all of Butch’s friends and fans to please respect our privacy at this time of sadness for our loss. Butch will play on in our hearts forever. Donations and remembrances in Butch’s name may be made to The Big House Museum in Macon, Georgia. www.thebighousemuseum.com.”
Gregg Allman, who along with Trucks, were the only band members to survive every lineup of the group until their split in 2014, said in a statement: “I’m heartbroken. I’ve lost another brother and it hurts beyond words. Butch and I knew each other since we were teenagers and we were bandmates for over 45 years. He was a great man and a great drummer and I’m going to miss him forever. Rest In Peace Brother Butch.”
Longtime Allmans guitarist Warren Haynes said: “Today we lost a Brother and the music world lost a great, innovative drummer and part of rock history. I am truly honored to have played music and shared life with Butch for over 25 years. It is a sad day indeed.”
Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi posted: “Rest in Peace Uncle Butch.”
Greg Allman’s son, Devon Allman wrote: “Devestated (sic) by this one. Butch Trucks Rest In Peace brother. Trucks family you are in my heart.”
Dickey Betts’ son, Duane Betts, posted: “I grew up watching Braves games and ‘Noles games with Butch. I loved his style of drumming that was such a part of the engine of the ABB sound. I am stunned and deeply saddened by this news. My heart goes out to the Trucks family.”
•Born Claude Hudson Truckson on May 11th, 1947 Jacksonville, Florida, Trucks didn’t become a drummer until late in high school. While attending Florida State University, he began gigging with Duane Allman. Trucks was supplemented in the ABB by legendary drummer Jai “Jaimoe” Johnny Johanson. The band’s original lineup also featured guitarist Dickey Betts and bassist Berry Oakley. Both Duane Allman and Oakley died in motorcycle accident in 1971 and 1972, respectively. In 1999, Trucks’ nephew, guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks joined the Allmans, revitalizing the band with his similarity to Duane Allman’s style.
•Butch Trucks spoke about the ABB chemistry in Randy Poe’s Duane Allman biography, Skydog, explaining, “Hittin’ the note is reaching that point where you can’t do any wrong. With us, when we’re playing music, it’s where the brain goes away and the body just does what it’s supposed to do, and there’s no thought and there’s no question, and no matter what you do, it’s right. It’s getting to that spiritual level where the communication is total, but it’s not mental.”
Following the ABB’s split, Butch Trucks toured under both his own name and with his new band, Butch Trucks & The Freight Train Band — who had shows on the books for this spring. Butch Trucks performed his last concert on January 6th.
