METALLICA, ALICE IN CHAINS, MORE CONTINUE TRIBUTES TO LEMMY
Tributes have continued to pour in from around the rock community for iconic Motorhead frontman Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, who died on Monday (December 28th) at the age of 70 after a brief struggle with cancer. Metallica, whose members credit Motorhead as one of their band’s biggest single influences, posted a video online of Lemmy jamming with the group at a 2009 show on the 1981 Motorhead song “Too Late, Too Late.” The video was captioned, “Our hero.”

Meanwhile, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett penned his own emotional tribute, writing, “When I had first seen pictures of what (Motorhead) looked like, I noticed a certain authenticity about them . . . I remember very distinctly having a realization that moment — I realized that it was OK to be an outsider and that it was OK to not feel like I had to conform to anything that I objected to in my teenage life because clearly the Motörhead guys in this picture looked like they didn’t conform to anything at all and boy it sure looked and sounded like they were enjoying themselves as a result.”

Alice In Chains singer William DuVall also shared a story about Lemmy online, writing, “About 15 years ago, I was driving down Sunset Blvd. near where I lived in West Hollywood. I pulled over into a driveway to talk to someone on my cellphone (this was before I had Bluetooth) and looked up to see Lemmy walking toward my car. He leaned in my passenger window and asked me if I could give him a ride to his favorite strip club in Silver Lake. I said, ‘Sure’ . . . When we pulled up outside the club, Lemmy pulled out a couple of $20 bills to hand me. I said, ‘No, man, it’s cool, really.’ Lemmy said, ‘Come on. I see you’re driving on your spare tire (which was true). Go on, take it. You need it. No time to be proud. I appreciate the lift. And the talk.’ So I took the money, let Lemmy out, and drove onward.”

DuVall continued, “The truth was I did need it. I had risked everything to move to Los Angeles with my band, Comes With The Fall. I was driving around in the 1995 Mercury Tracer that my grandfather had left me, the car that had gotten me across the country. I’d gotten a flat a couple of weeks earlier and, as Lemmy noted, was still driving on the ‘donut’ spare tire because I couldn’t afford a proper replacement. I appreciated the simplicity and straightforwardness of Lemmy’s reasoning.”
•Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi, who fought off cancer himself three years ago, wrote, “Very sad to hear of the passing of our dear friend Lemmy. He gave so much to the music business and was totally dedicated to his fans. His legend will never die. His life was all about the music, being on stage and a giving pleasure to others.”
•Artists including Brian May of Queen, Tom Morello, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and members of Guns N’ Roses, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters and dozens more have continued to pay tribute to Lemmy online.
•Motorhead’s manager, Todd Singerman, told Rolling Stone that Lemmy was diagnosed with terminal cancer of the brain and neck just a few days before his death. He was given two to six months to live.
•Singerman and members of the band’s organization had noticed in recent days that Lemmy was having trouble speaking and seemed completely exhausted.
•Lemmy had dealt with several health issues over the past few years, including heart trouble, forcing him to cut back on his famous smoking and Jack Daniels habits. The band was forced to cancel a number of shows this year, although they did manage to complete one final European tour on December 11th.

DEE SNIDER SAYS LEMMY KILMISTER SAVED TWISTED SISTER
With the sudden passing of Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister this week many musicians have come forward to share the impact that Kilmister had on the their career. One little known gem was shared by Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider who explained how instrumental Kilmister was to his group’s career. During an interview with Artisan News Service, Snider explained that Motorhead was instrumental in breaking Twisted Sister in the United Kingdom back in 1982.
•According to Snider, Twisted Sister was offered the special guest slot of a heavy metal show at a soccer stadium in Wrexham, North Wales that Motorhead was headlining. According to Snider, “makeup-wearing bands were not only nonexistent but completely unacceptable to English metal fans.” Kilmister took the extra step of coming out to introduce Twisted Sister to Motorhead’s fans.
•Snider said, “Lemmy made it cool to like Twisted . . . At Wrexham, Motorhead’s crowd had their bottles ready for us. We were s***ting our pants, so for the headliner to bring on the opening act was just the coolest thing possible. I’ll love him forever for that.”
•Snider also described the incident in his autobiography, Shut Up And Give Me The Mic. He wrote, “I am still not sure why Lemmy showed us this kindness. It’s probably just the way he is wired and one of the reasons he is so beloved. He may be a pirate, but he’s a benevolent pirate.”

This year’s song of the summer is a ballad, not a banger. Here’s what that says about us

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
