Finger Lakes winemakers and other business owners are asking Governor Andrew Cuomo to deny permits for a proposed propane storage facility in a former salt mine along Seneca Lake.

The group called for the denial of permits during a Wednesday afternoon press conference in Albany.

They were joined by Dr. Rob Mackenzie, the former president and CEO of Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca.

“This is a disaster waiting to happen,” Mackenzie said. “(We’re) asking him (Governor Cuomo) to protect Schuyler County, Watkins Glen, Seneca Lake, the wineries around it, by saying no to an unsafe proposal.

Mackenzie says the project, which has the support of a majority of Schuyler County lawmakers, would endanger drinking water supplies, the local economy and the region’s booming wine and tourism industry.
