Troops return to New York after deployment to Afghanistan

Hundreds of soldiers in the 10th Mountain Division have returned home to their northern New York Army post after spending most of the past year deployed to Afghanistan.

Officials at Fort Drum near Watertown say about 400 of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team’s 2,100 troops have returned home so far. Three welcome home ceremonies were held at Fort Drum this week for the returning troops.

The soldiers are back at the base after spending the past nine months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in east Afghanistan. The unit is helping to train Afghan National Security Forces.
