Planning board members in the village of Lansing have given a needed approval for a planned mosque.

The 4,828 square foot facility, which would be constructed on Graham Road, is meant to serve the Muslim population in the Ithaca area, mostly at the region’s colleges and universities.

“Muslims need a place to gather and have an identity, and in addition their children have the right to learn and practice their true Islamic religion,” said Ahmed H Ahmed with the Al-Huda Islamic Center’s committee.

He says there is no common place in the area for Muslims to practice their religion.

Some residents at Monday’s meeting expressed concerns over parking and stormwater management issues, but the Lansing Star Online reports that those issues were addressed before the approval was given.
