Ithaca College looks to quell flu spike

This week, Ithaca College saw a sudden and rapid increase in students suffering from the flu.

College officials put out an influenza alert Wednesday that the health center had 25-lab confirmed cases of influenza over the first two days of the week.

Dr. Justine Schaff, director of the Hammond Health Center, said they have seen 56 students with influenza-like illnesses since Saturday.

In response, the center held a walk-in influenza vaccine clinic on Thursday. Schoff said the center gave out 225 flu shots that day.

“We gave 1,200 flu shots from August until Monday, and then in just one day we gave 225,” Schaff said. “That’s sort of unheard of for our clinic.”

She encourages everyone in Tompkins County to get their flu vaccine if they haven’t already.
