Doctors advise caution when shoveling snow

Shoveling snow can be a demanding task, but local doctors are cautioning people not to overexert themselves.

Dr. Amit Singh heads the Cayuga Heart Institute at Cayuga Medical Center. He says the hospital sees increased visits this time of year of people coming in suffering from a heart attack or a heart condition.

He says going from being inactive to a high stress activity like shoveling snow can lead to immediate heart problems.

“Lifting heavy, wet snow, pushing it in a cold temperature causes mechanisms that predispose to heart disease and in fact heart attacks,” Dr. Singh said.

He said just the cold weather itself can cause arteries to spasm or close.

The most common symptom of a heart attack is chest pain. You might also feel muscle tightness, anxiety or shortness of breath.
