Fire investigators are looking for the cause of a blaze that has gutted a Binghamton furniture store that has been in businesses for more than a century.

Officials say the fire was reported around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ellis Brothers Furniture building in the city’s downtown business district. The flames shot up from the showroom floor and burned through the four-story structure before firefighters got the blaze under control.

No one was inside the store when the fire broke out. The blaze prompted street closures and shut down neighboring businesses for hours.

Ellis Brothers Furniture has been a fixture in downtown Binghamton since the store opened in 1900.
